What is MDAI?

5,6-Methylenedioxy-2-aminoindane is a research chemical that was first chemically profiled and synthesized at Purdue University by David E. Nichols. Due to its interesting property as a non-neurotoxic selective serotonin releasing agent (SSRA), it has been a very popular research chemical in the USA, UK, and Europe. Although only licensed for in vitro (outside living organism) research it is known from other studies that it is not only non-neurotoxic but would act as an entactogen should it ever be licensed for in vivo research. it became unavailable for a short period within the UK, but is now back, with even higher purity.

What is MDAI used for?

Due to the chemical structure and relatedness to other SSRI’s, it is reasonable to assume that MDAI would bind to either the serotonin receptor or the serotonin transporter protein. Researchers could use a synthetic membrane infused with these two proteins to determine which one it binds to. The affinity could be determined, or a competitive ligand binding assay could be performed to determine if there is any preference for a particular protein.

Chemistry students may wish to use it as a primary reagent, or it could be used as a reference sample for chemical libraries of NMR, HPLC, FTIR, and GC/MS analysis. These results or even the sample itself could be used by toxicologists and forensic scientists.

Dosage

There is no recommended dose since for these drugs because it isn’t for human consumption. In this way, it is sold uniquely as a research chemical for research purposes.

The clinical effects of most new designer drugs can be described as either hallucinogenic, stimulant, or opioid-like. They may also have a combination of these effects due to designer side-chain substitutions.
